Coldplay Concert Coming to Virtual Reality

While I’m sure that I’m not nearly as cool as I think I am, I’ll still readily admit to something some may consider lame. I’ve been to a Coldplay concert. Maybe they’re too popular or too soft, or maybe they’re not as hip as some other acts out there, but when I did see them, even for me, someone who is not really a fan, with their soaring melodies and Chris Martin’s charm, it was hard not to get caught up in the moment. And love them or hate them, you have to admit they’ve got some catchy songs, the power of which is only amplified when you’re lost in a sea of fans of one of the world’s most popular acts.

I’m fortunate to live in a big city and that I occasionally have friends who buy tickets they can’t use and therefore I get to go to shows like Coldplay. But while I may not be a big fan, the truth is there are a ton of them out there who may never get the chance I did to see them live, even though Coldplay’s continuing A Head Full of Dreams is now the fifth highest grossing tour of all time according to Billboard Boxscore. The thing is, just like any popular act, there a lot of people who don’t live in big cities and some of those people are certainly Coldplay fans who don’t have friends flipping them free tickets.

But let’s say you’re one of those who don’t live in a major city. Let’s say instead you’re the biggest Coldplay fan in a small town in Newfoundland. Chances are slim that your favorite band will be gracing your lovely home province anytime soon and it’s not hard to figure that the cost of a return flight to their closest concert, plus tickets, accommodations, food, etc. would be out of reach for many of us. Having grown up in a small-town what I do know is what would normally happen is you’d just dream about what going to a concert that size would be like. But on August 17th, thanks to virtual reality, those small-town dreams, or really the dreams of anyone wanting to experience a Coldplay concert, can come true (or pretty close to it).

Coldplay, in conjunction with Samsung and Live Nation will live stream their upcoming concert from Chicago’s Soldier Field. Fans will need a Gear VR headset and compatible Samsung smartphone to get into the show through the Samsung VR service and if you can’t get your act together in time for the 17th, that’s okay. The show’s replay will be available on the Samsung service for a limited time.

Now what if you’re in that small-town in Newfoundland and you don’t have a Samsung phone and Gear headset? Well, I guess you’re out of luck. But at least now you know that the Coldplay virtual reality experience exists and that in the future there will likely be more opportunities than ever to see your favourite acts, for only the price of a virtual reality set up, which is sure to be less expensive than tickets, a hotel and that return flight out of St. John’s.
