The question that most, if not all, of virtual reality is probably asking right now is, did he or didn’t he?

When AltspaceVR announced it was set to close on August 3rd, the company kept itself on life support,   keeping its social platform alive as they tried to secure more financing, Despite groundbreaking tech, what seemed clear at the time of the news of its imminent demise is that although the platform was popular amongst its users, the tepid growth of its user base and the slow adoption of VR in general kept AltspaceVR from being a value investment.

If Altspace were to keep its lights on, it would require more than fresh capital hoping for growth, it would need a benefactor who believes in VR. It would need someone like… Palmer Luckey?

On July 29th, Luckey, the embattled founder of Oculus VR and designer of the Oculus Rift, posted a poll on twitter asking his followers if he should save AltspaceVR. The final results, after 5,493 votes: sixty-seven percent agreed that yes, he should. And shockingly, not long after, AltspaceVR was, in fact, saved.

Now, that’s not to say that Luckey saved AltspaceVR. Sure, he might have, but up until now he hasn’t taken any credit, is not commenting and it’s quite possible that there were others out there trying to keep the social platform alive. For its part AltspaceVR is also being quiet, saying that they will reveal more details in the coming months, as it seems they’re still in discussions with “third parties” to keep the platform alive and growing into the future.

The Altspace statement is vague and reading it does give a sense that whatever or whoever stepped up to help keep AltspaceVR alive still hasn’t yet finalized the details of their deal. But either way, it’s got to be a relief for the many fans of the virtual reality experience AltspaceVR brings to its users, knowing that at least for the time being, their use of the social platform should continue.

And in the meantime, we all can enjoy the mystery of who may have been the one to step up and save one of the bright lights of the virtual reality space.
